本論文試圖考察德國社會學家 Norbert Elias 的社會學基本概念——「形態」與「過程」，從中探討其「文明理論」的基本提問與構想。本論文考察的重點並不在於Elias歷史研究中的具體內容，而是在Elias歷史分析的基礎上，藉由「著作史」的回顧與考察，釐清Elias「文明理論」的整體框架和其社會學基本概念的關聯。本論文認為，Elias提出「形態」概念的用意，不僅在於指出人類社會相互依賴的基本特質，更在於回應西方近代以來，伴隨著「文明化過程」所形成的人類自我圖像。因此，對於 Elias「形態」概念的理解，就必須同時考慮Elias述及長期「社會過程」的三個向度：「文明化」、「個體化」和「知識化」，如此方能進一步回答 Elias「文明理論」的兩個提問：文明化的動力與近代人類自我意識之間的關係。Elias 的「文明理論」，不僅說明人際互賴的複雜性與交織化過程產生的各種推力、拉力與抗力，同時也指出，逐步學習自我調節的文明人，如何在「文明化」、「個體化」與「知識化」的長期交互作用下，產生「自己╱他人」、「內在╱外在」的知識框架，並內化成人們認識和適應交織關係的社會慣習。成為文明人的「過程」，不僅指涉更為糾結的、不易看透且充滿張力的「形態」，亦展現出文明人日益理性化與心理學化的自我圖像。
