This thesis explores the political economy of cryptocurrency adoption and regulation in Australia, Taiwan, the United States, Japan, China, and India. The study finds an inverse relationship between political stability and cryptocurrency adoption, with stable countries showing lower adoption rates due to confidence in traditional financial systems. Democratic regimes tend to adopt more liberal policies, while authoritarian regimes enforce stricter regulations. Additionally, countries with decentralized financial systems and higher central bank independence exhibit lower adoption but stricter regulatory frameworks. The research underscores the role of financial inclusion in driving cryptocurrency adoption in regions with limited banking access. Future studies should expand the scope, conduct longitudinal analyses, and investigate the interaction between central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and cryptocurrencies to deepen understanding in this evolving field.
