This research attempts to use the form of philosophical speculation by studying the dialectical system of the hexagrams in I-Ching, using "recovery" in Asian psychology as the core concept, developing the counseling discourse contained in I-Ching with the methods to enhance the individual recovery into an effective, testable, and referential counseling approach, trying to name it I-Ching Recovery-oriented Approach, practicing it in individual counseling, group counseling, and other psychological treatments to facilitate the alleviation, recovery and self-empowerment of individual issues, and helping individuals to face their issues and difficulties, accelerating the recovery effects.
I-Ching, aka “Book of Changes” is a speculative classic that reveals various "equations of life". It uses an organic view of life, uses the basic concept of "unchanged" to face the everchanging issues, and uses “easy” and practical ways to help the individuals to recover. Through the intervention of I-Ching recovery- oriented counseling, to assist the individuals to find their true faces, returning to the genuine selves, and enhancing the individuals’ recovery.
This study combines the philosophical concepts of the 64 hexagrams and extracts the counseling meanings in I-Ching to develop the conceptualization of the individual issues and the therapeutic structure of treatment methods. As just mentioned, the human-nature view of the I-Ching recovery orientation is shown in the belief in the inherent resilience of the individual: the orientation believes that any issue encountered by the individual, regardless of its cause, conceptual description, and solution, has been rooted in the individual. The individual is trapped because he/she cannot be aware of and cannot awaken his/her inner strength to face the issue. Through the projection and deduction of hexagrams in I-Ching, to assist individuals motivating their understanding and seeing of their own issues to awaken their inner resilience and to encourage self-healing.
This study has sorted out the corresponding issues of the sixty-four hexagrams in I-Ching. Through the hexagrams of the sixty-four hexagrams, the conceptualization of the antithesis is formed, and then through the different lines of each hexagram, it provides the intervention to and the compliance with the corresponding issues.
I-Ching recovery-oriented counseling can increase the individuals’ awareness during the counseling process to empower the individuals, to increase their inner power to form "I-Ching resilience", and to help the individuals finding themselves back in the trapped issues.
