The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between pretend play and theory of mind in young children. Sixty-four 4- and 5-year-olds were recruited from a public kindergarten in the central region of Taiwan. One pretend play observation scale and three types of theory of mind task were utilized. Results indicate that 5-year-olds have a better performance on overall pretend play than their 4-year-old counterparts. Although age influences young children’s communication, the performance of 4-year-olds in representation transformation is no longer poorer than their older counterparts. Sex takes a significant effect on overall pretend play and representation transformation, but not communication. Age has an effect on the overall theory of mind, unexpected transfer tasks, and unexpected content tasks, but not appearance-reality distinction task. Both male and female subjects perform equally well on the theory of mind tasks. In conclusion, pretend play and theory of mind shows a positive significant correlation.
