The thesis focuses on the effect of ethnicity on the lives of queer and racial subjects in Ocean Vuong’s semi-autobiographical novel, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous. This book is a semiautobiographical novel in which readers are treated with an in-depth look at the family’s traumatic past, the intense love-hate relationship between the protagonist and his mother, the erotic awakening
through the forbidden homosexual love affair, and the overriding structure of inequality that has trapped the less fortunate in society, regardless of their sex, race, and sexuality. As a VietnameseAmerican queer writer raised by a single mother in Hartford, Connecticut, Ocean Vuong had a childhood mixed with anxious protection and domestic violence from his grandmother and mother. The novel is written in epistolary form, as an intimate monologue to his illiterate mother that weaves together a beautiful yet painful story across three generations of an immigrant family who came to the United States after the Vietnam war. I contend that underneath the immigrant saga dealing with the personal and the familial lies an entrenched mechanism of power that has been both silently internalized from within and forcefully imposed from without by people of different races, classes
and sexualities.
