In the past, studies on the physical health of children have mostly focused on the impact of divorce or the loss of a parent, separately. This article examines children health and single-parenting both divorce and widowhood by analyzing panel data from 22 cities and counties in Taiwan between 2011 and 2021. Specifically, this study looks at the prevalence of three common viruses among Taiwanese children (enterovirus, influenza and influenza-like illness) by applying open government data from sources such as the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Department of Gender Equality of the Executive Yuan, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting, and Statistics of the Executive Yuan (DGBAS), the Ministry of Education, and the Department of Household Registration of the Ministry of the Interior to determine whether the health of children in single-parent households are at higher risk.
The results showed that parents’ marital and vital status significantly influenced children’s susceptibility to enterovirus, influenza and influenza-like illness. The susceptibility of children to enterovirus infection is most prominently observed in cases of first marriage. There is a strong correlation between divorce, first marriage and a heightened susceptibility of children to influenza infection. Both divorce and first marriage have the most notable influence on children's susceptibility to influenza-like illnesses. These findings highlights the significance of extending assistance and allocating resources to families who are undergoing significant life changes, such as divorce and widowhood.
