Left hemispheric dominance is known to be common in the general population, and atypical lateralization was proven to relate to developmental disabilities such as reading difficulty. This study investigates phonological awareness abilities and cerebral lateralization in typically developing (TD, N=18) and reading difficulty (RD, N=18) children in Taiwan through word generation task and phonological awareness task by functional transcranial Doppler sonography (fTCD). The results showed that the TD group showed a general pattern of left-lateralization in both tasks, and similar results were observed in the RD group. As for the laterality index of the more reading-related phonological awareness task, there was no significant relationship between the abilities of phonological awareness at the group level. Nevertheless, several interesting findings were found when divided into four groups by the development and lateralization. In summary, we found no direct evidence that there is a specific relationship between typical/atypical lateralization and phonological awareness ability.
