Depression is one of the common mental health issue in modern society. Previous research has found that isolation and loneliness are related to depression, yet the underlying mechanisms between social disconnectedness and depression are not well understood. Present research therefore proposes a moderated mediation model to examine the association between them, hypothesizing that social media interaction serves as the mediating variable between social disconnectedness and depression, and the perception of responses on social media moderates this relationship. Self-reported data from 363 participants who aged 18 years old and above in Taiwan were collected through online questionnaires. Measures included social disconnectedness (modified UCLA Loneliness Scale and social isolation scale), depression (modified CES-D Scale), social media interaction and perceived responses. Results were consistent with the hypothesized conceptual scheme, social media interaction mediated the relationship between social disconnectedness and depression when individual’s perceived response on social media was low but not when perceived response was high. In sum, the findings indicated that social interaction and others’ responses through social media represents key mechanisms in determining how social disconnectedness is associated with depression. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed in this study.
