Text and pictures are the most popular multi-media formats, which are employed in the botanic curriculums. However, there are some issues and limitations for representing the outlook and the related knowledge of plants in 2D based paper or computer monitor. Therefore, students need to observe the real plants after reading the curriculums for enhancing learning performance and keeping the botanic knowledge in long-term-memory.
The real plants in the wild filed somehow do not support students to observe the whole outlook, especially the parts which are burying underground. Even in the supermarket, most of the plants are pre-processed before sold, thus students may have difficulty of finding the plants and observing the whole and original outlook of plants after the botanic course.
This thesis constructs a 3D plant observation system in mobile platform via Shiva 3D development software. Students could observe 11 whole-outlook plants by interactive operations like zoom-in, zoom-out and rotation in the mobile devices when observing the real plants in fields or in supermarkets. 43 students participated the experiments to analyze the difference of learning performance between 2D based e-Book and interactive 3D based mobile learning. The results illustrate that students have better learning achievement and learning motivation in 3D based learning than 2D based e-Book.
