本研究的動機起因於個人在學習國標舞的過程中，對高度性別化的舞蹈動作之不適應，以及對自我性別認同的探索。透過參與觀察校內社團、坊間團體班、專業舞蹈教室，和許多國標舞的表演、比賽活動，以及深度訪談十八位男女舞者後，我傾向將性別看做個人與社會文化及他人互動下，有意識地依當下的情境和扮演的角色所展演出的行動，而非固著僵化的人群分類概念。
身體是國標舞者來回於個人─舞蹈─社會三者間，經驗世界和展演自我最主要且最直接的媒介，而性別是他們定位自我（尤其是在國標舞中）的主要依據之一。有別於以往將舞蹈和身體當作文本來解讀的方式，本論文從國標舞者的個人身體經驗和實踐行為出發，以Bourdieu的實踐理論，結合Butler的性別展演概念，討論舞者如何在學習、與舞伴互動和參與比賽競技的過程中，如何逐漸了解、體認並內化國標舞的性別結構，進而產生性別化的身體慣習，並從展演的概念探究舞者如何在舞蹈表演、日常生活及不同的舞蹈情境中，透過身體與社會文化和他人互動，不斷地轉換其自我認同，並有意識地展演出他們當下所扮演的性別角色。
