This study focuses on the analysis of motivations behind Last Chance Tourism (LCT), exploring the reasons why modern tourists visit destinations that are at risk of disappearing or facing significant environmental threats. With global climate change and environmental degradation on the rise, this type of tourism has been gaining popularity, attracting a group of tourists who wish to experience these landscapes and cultures before they vanish. The study aims to reveal whether these tourists' primary motivations are influenced by personality traits, conspicuous consumption, and tourism collective behavior.Firstly, this research thoroughly investigates the definition of Last Chance Tourism and its impact on the tourism industry. Previous studies have shown that although this type of tourism is receiving widespread attention in the market, it further challenges the fragility of the tourist destinations. Particularly, the natural resources and cultural heritage of these destinations face greater risks of destruction amidst this tourism trend. To explore the motivations of individuals participating in Last Chance Tourism, the study categorizes personality traits into five major dimensions: extraversion, openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and neuroticism. The findings indicate that individuals with higher levels of extraversion and openness are more inclined to participate in this type of tourism, exhibiting stronger motivations for collecting experiences. These tourists often seek unique and rare experiences and hope to demonstrate their adventurous spirit and taste through these collected experiences.Furthermore, the study points out that conspicuous consumption plays a mediating role in the motivations for this type of tourism. Some tourists engage in Last Chance Tourism primarily to showcase their unique experiences on social media or within their social circles, thereby gaining recognition and status. This type of conspicuous behavior is closely related to maintaining an individual's self-image and social status, especially among the younger generation of tourists. This research, through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), analyzes the relationships among the aforementioned variables, confirming the significant impact of personality traits on tourism motivations, and highlighting the key role of conspicuous consumption in enhancing the link between collective behavior and tourism motivations. These findings not only contribute to understanding the behavioral patterns of modern tourists but also provide valuable insights for destination management and marketing strategies. Future research should further explore other potential factors influencing Last Chance Tourism motivations, such as socio-cultural backgrounds and personal values, to fully understand this increasingly important tourism phenomenon.
