陪讀媽媽(study mama)的身分是配合新加坡的留學教育和移民政策所制定出來。政策的用意是希望未成年的國際學生，在母親的陪伴之下受到妥善的照顧。然而在新加坡的中國陪讀媽媽們，卻因為非法打工的問題，使得母親陪讀的身分引起爭議。
從另一方面而言，觀察當代華人跨國家庭的媒體以及相關研究，使用「孟母三遷」的典故去形容現代母親效法孟母精神，為了提供子女良好的求學環境，不惜大規模的進行國際搬遷，犧牲自己原有的工作機會和社會網絡，與丈夫和原生家庭分隔兩地，跨國專職照顧留學的子女。
無論是被稱許的現代孟母，還是被指責利用身分非法打工的母親，陪讀的跨國家庭結構和母親的角色，都突破了傳統的界線領域劃分。此類型的跨國家庭結構裡，父親的角色缺乏能動性，教育和撫育子女的責任全由母親承擔，需要非法打工的母親，既是照顧者又是養家者，但是關於母親的職責卻受到質疑。本研究旨在探討這種矛盾的身分跨越，重新思考母職、親情、家庭，在全球化資本流動底下的意義。
本研究採取人類學民族誌的研究方法，從2007年至2008年期間，三次在新加坡進行田野研究工作，參與觀察新加坡中國母親的陪讀生活，深入訪談12位來自中國(主要來自北方和東北方的城市) 的母親，她們的年齡在32歲至43歲之間，子女初到新加坡就學的年紀在6歲至16歲之間。
研究發現陪讀媽媽在新加坡被當地人他者化的情形嚴重，主要和近年來中國和其他亞洲國家的經貿發展關係，以及媒體建構的國籍、族群和性別刻板印象相關，導致陪讀媽媽身為女人的身分比起身為母親的身分，更被突顯出來。
另一個重要的研究發現是母親選擇到新加坡陪讀的因素是多重的。許多母親在國內已經離婚，或是與伴侶的婚姻關係不和睦，因此遷居國外，除了子女的留學教育之外，對於母親而言跨國的動機也是為了更換一種新的生活。這些母親對於陪讀和母職的看法，挑戰了母職無償薪的概念，鬆動了家庭結構中雙親角色的界線
