Smart textiles have evolved significantly since they first appeared in Japan in 1989, where a blend of traditional craftsmanship and technological innovation marked a pivotal moment in fabric development. Over the years, these textiles have expanded beyond their initial applications and are now used in various sectors such as healthcare, military, and sportswear. This growth has been supported by strong market projections, with Taiwan emerging as a central hub and earning the nickname 'Textile Silicon Valley' alongside global leaders like China, the USA, Korea, and India. This study explores the patent trends and comparative advantages (CA) that highlight the strategic positions, ongoing innovation, and specialization of leading countries in the smart textile industry. It also examines Taiwan’s smart textiles, where significant innovative capabilities have been shown to meet the growing needs of various applications. Challenges such as technological standardization, high development costs, and the necessity for cross-industry collaboration are discussed, highlighting the efforts of institutions like TTRI and companies like Makalot in advancing research and maintaining Taiwan's leadership in high-value textile production. These case studies provide insights into strategies, challenges, and collaborations, enabling a comprehensive analysis of the current and future landscape in this field.
