本論文主要探討越南語的模態結構，利用製圖理論（Cartographic Approach）的觀點來分析越南語模態詞的句法分佈與語意詮釋的對應關係（Rizzi，1997；Cinque，1999）。
越南語中，模態詞分為三大類：知識模態（epistemic modals），義務模態（deontic modals）跟能願模態（dynamic modals）。透過各種句法測試我們可以把越南語的模態層次區分開來：知識模態詞的句法位置最高並高於外主語，接著是義務模態詞，最低為能願模態詞。此外，越南語模態詞可分為兩類：模態副詞與模態助動詞，而且可以透過動詞組的前置（VP-fronting）跟動詞組刪略（VP-ellipsis）等句法測試來區分這兩類模態詞。
最後，本文又更進一步研究越南语不同類型的模態詞的詮釋的高度。可見，不同類型的模態詞會有不同的詮釋高度。此高度是有意義的。因為只有位於vP以上和不能太高之位置的模態詞才能夠讓非殊指的主語授權合法存在。因此，越南語義務模態詞和非殊指的主語有密切的關係。
