In recent years, the exchange between Vietnam and Taiwan has been increasing. Taiwan has implemented talent cultivation programs in its education policies to enhance economic development, and cultural exchange, and attract more young Vietnamese students to pursue their academic dreams in Taiwan. However, as the number of students pursuing higher education continues to rise, reading skills play a crucial role for these students. In order to complete academic requirements, graduate students are required to read a significant number of academic papers. While reading academic papers presents a substantial challenge for native Chinese speakers in the context of research and learning, the difficulty is amplified for students whose second language is Chinese. As a result, strengthening the reading strategies of Chinese academic papers for non-native-speaking students has also become one of the important topics. However, there is a scarcity of research on the reading strategies employed by foreign graduate students when reading Chinese papers. Therefore, this study focuses on Vietnamese graduate students studying in Taiwan, and to collect and observe the strategies used by Vietnamese graduate students in reading Chinese papers through the method of thinking aloud and in-depth interviews. These strategies will then be subject to discussion and analysis.
In the results of the study, it was found that there are three types of "Local strategies", " Global Strategies " and " Knowledge of Cognition " used by Vietnamese graduate students when reading Chinese academic papers. The three most commonly used strategies by Vietnamese graduate students when reading Chinese papers are "reacting to the text ", " monitoring reading pace and reading behavior" and "identifying the main idea." Insufficient vocabulary, fonts, styles, and background knowledge are also barriers for Vietnamese students when reading Chinese papers.
In order to solve reading difficulties they will express the use of gloss " monitors reading pace and reading behavior ", " uses inference or draws conclusions ", " identifies, through circling, underlining, or placing an arrow, words/ phrases not understood " and "ask" strategies to deal with barriers of reading. Besides, the use of "Chinese-Vietnamese words" is also an advantage for Vietnamese graduate students in reading Chinese papers.
This thesis expects to study the strategies used by Vietnamese graduate students when reading Chinese papers, it can reveal the status of Vietnamese graduate students' reading strategies when reading Chinese papers, so as to improve the efficiency of Vietnamese graduate students in reading Chinese papers and it can be the basis and reference for future research on the reading strategies of Vietnamese students and the types of papers in related fields.
