Purpose: This study aims to explore leisure participation and technology use in entertainment for autistic young adults. We compared autistic individuals’ leisure preferences, motivations, and barriers with their neurotypical peers, especially how they use technology in their leisure time.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey with autistic young adults as well as their neurotypical peers. Survey questions included demographics, types of leisure activities, leisure motivations, and factors to leisure participation. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to summarize participants’ responses and evaluate group differences.
Results: In total, 114 autistic and 126 neurotypical young adults were included in the analysis. Both autistic and neurotypical participants redefined leisure participation, choosing to spend more time on non-traditional activities that help them relax, such as recreational eating and phone scrolling. Compared to their neurotypical peers, more autistic persons identified themselves as externally motivated and desired social recognition when participating in leisure activities. However, autistic youth often experience social and mental challenges in leisure participation. Autistic youth were more likely to seek virtual social relationships on dating apps or livestreams, whereas neurotypical youth tended to use social media to maintain their real-life social relationships.
Conclusion: Based on our survey results, we find that creating a supportive, inclusive, and friendly leisure environment is essential for autistic persons to participate in leisure activities. Promoting leisure participation, in turn, may enhance autistic youth’s life satisfaction and enrich their life experience.
